Newington Primary Raise Funds for PPMBT

moatbrae, April 26, 2016

Thanks to all the teachers and pupils at Newington Primary in Annan, who, for the third year, have run projects about JM Barrie and a tour to Moat Brae followed with enterprising fundraising by the pupils at the school.

This year we were delighted to receive the proceeds from their Bake Sale which was presented to PPMBT Trustee Flora Burns and PPMBT Volunteer Christine Wharram.

During a previous talk to the children, Mrs Burns had mentioned the literary connection between JM Barrie and some of her favourite sweeties – Quality Street.  In the 1930’s an early example of modern marketing  changed the way sweeties were sold –MacKintosh of Halifax named an exotic new collection of chocolates after one of the most popular plays of the day – JM Barrie’s Quality Street.  The packaging included characters from the play, which was set in Napoleonic Times, on the colourful tins.  The play ran in London and was a hit, having 459 performances.  It also made it onto the silver screen twice, including the 1937 version starring Katharine Hepburn.

Mrs Burns was therefore delighted when one of the children – Cammy –  realised he had just the thing holding his stamp collection. He brought his Quality Tin in to school and was more than happy to hand it over to Moat Brae for our collection of artefacts. It takes pride of place alongside our signed copy of the play.
